This position serves as a key contributor to Velera’s compliance and privacy programs within the Regulatory Compliance & Privacy department, ensuring that the company exercises due diligence and sound internal controls to operate with integrity and protect against legal, compliance, and privacy risks. The attorney will be responsible for providing legal support to any compliance and privacy research, issues, investigations, contract reviews, and audits. They will work closely with the compliance and privacy counsel manager, compliance and privacy principal, senior management, and enterprise risk. They will review and draft legal documents and advise departments on legal, regulatory compliance, and privacy issues related to credit union support, vendors, projects, and sales and marketing.

Role Responsibilities

  • Assist management and Compliance and Privacy Principal in developing and maintaining comprehensive compliance and privacy programs to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Advise various internal departments regarding regulatory terms and implications on business operations.
  • Provide advice, guidance and insight to Senior Management and staff personnel on emerging compliance and privacy issues and consult and guide Velera in establishment of controls to mitigate risk.
  • Remain current and knowledgeable about applicable legislation and regulations, as well as pending legislation and administrative regulations pertinent to the company; provide counsel to other departments in interpretation and training to minimize compliance and privacy risks.
  • Ensure that company-wide policies and procedures, on matters for which the General Counsel is responsible, are applied in full recognition of all legal implications and risks.
  • Research, draft memos, and respond to inquiries related to legal, compliance, and privacy matters affecting the company.
  • Review, revise, and negotiate contractual terms to ensure alignment with regulatory compliance and privacy requirements.
  • Assist senior internal counsel with matters including legal research projects and in litigation preparation and support.
  • Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for corporations on compliance and privacy-related matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Specifications

Education

  • Undergraduate Degree and JD Degree (from ABA-accredited law school) required.
  • Admission to a state bar with an active membership in good standing is required; admission to the State of Florida Bar is preferred.

Experience

  • Three (3) years experience as a practicing attorney.
  • At least two (2) years of compliance and/or privacy-related experience, preferably in the financial services industry.
  • Experience within a corporate legal environment is preferred.
  • Experience working in the financial services sector is preferred.
  • Experience in drafting and reviewing contracts is preferred.
  • ACH and payment network experience preferred.

  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of all compliance, regulatory, and privacy requirements applicable to the credit card, debit card, and consumer finance industry; including but not limited to Federal laws and regulations
  • Experience reviewing, revising, and drafting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with compliance and privacy requirements, including, extracting information and completing forms, and performing quality assurance audits pursuant to standard checklists.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a clear, concise manner in both verbal and written formats with individuals or groups and give presentations utilizing various audio/visual support aids.
  • Ability to project a polished and professional demeanor and can handle confidential matters with utmost integrity.
  • Ability to establish relationships and rapport with all levels of personnel, executive management, peers, attorneys, vendors, clients, and members.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment in making decisions.
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet computer software applications.
  • Ability to travel as needed to successfully perform position responsibilities, and handle disruptive work schedules, deadlines, and unpredictable events.
