Purpose of the Position
Supports and contributes to external business analytics projects and processes to provide data-driven insights used to advise the client and develop strategies for operational improvements and future business initiatives. Uses statistical methods, modeling, analytical methodologies, and data analysis to develop and deploy tools including dashboards, infographics, reports, and models to inform and support decision-making. Mines, processes, and analyzes internal and external data using KPIs, business results, industry sources, competitor intelligence, and customer information. Develops a good understanding of the business’s model, objectives, issues, and challenges by interacting and collaborating with users and stakeholders. Incumbent in this role is occasionally directed in several aspects of the work and is gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.
Key Responsibilities
Data Analysts in the lending industry play a vital role in bridging the gap between data and business decisions. In this role, the incumbent will collaborate with the Data & Business Intelligence teams to ensure data analysis projects, reports or dashboards deliver the specific data required for decision-making.
- Familiar with Campaign Performance Analysis: Analyze the effectiveness of marketing campaigns from lead generation, customer acquisition, loan approval, and payment processing.
- Loan Performance Analysis: Analyze loan performance metrics (delinquency rates, loss rates, loan-to-value ratios) to assess portfolio health and identify potential risks.
- Profitability Analysis: Analyze loan profitability by product type, borrower segment, and other relevant factors to inform pricing strategies and resource allocation.
- Forecasting & Budgeting: Use historical data and market trends to forecast future loan demand, revenue, and expenses to support budgeting and resource planning.
Credit Risk:
- Credit Scoring Model Development & Monitoring: Work with data scientists to develop and maintain credit scoring models that accurately assess borrower creditworthiness. Monitor model performance and adjust as needed.
- Regulatory Compliance Analysis: Analyze loan data to ensure compliance with lending regulations (e.g., Fair Isaac and Dodd-Frank Act).
- Risk Identification & Mitigation: Identify potential risk factors in loan applications and develop strategies to mitigate those risks (e.g., stricter credit score requirements, loan size limitations).
Fraud Detection:
- Analyze overall fraud metrics and identify and report on emerging trends.
- Identify suspicious activity by monitoring daily reporting and flagging any deviation from normal patterns of system behavior.
- Determine the proper resolution of all defined alerts reported via fraud monitoring application.
- Compile and manipulate data from multiple sources to derive end-to-end performance metrics for fraud.
- Design and implement new internal and external Fraud reports and/or alert criteria.
- Take ownership of work and proactively engage in identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Provide analytical support to ad hoc requests for reporting and data analysis.
- Perform investigations regarding actual and suspected fraud and provide appropriate resolution and/or guidance to Call Center, Compliance, or IT departments.
Overall:
- Data Visualization & Communication: Create presentations to communicate data insights effectively to business stakeholders with varying technical backgrounds.
- Stay Up-to-Date: Continuously learn about new data analysis tools, techniques, and industry regulations.
- By collaborating with these business units and leveraging data analysis expertise, the Business Data Analyst plays a key role in optimizing marketing campaigns, managing credit risk, ensuring compliance, improving product offerings, and enhancing customer experience within the lending industry.
Education and Experience
Required:
- Bachelor of Arts/Science from an accredited university with major in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Math, Economics, Finance, or a similar quantitative field. PLUS two (2) or more years of work experience conducting analysis & reporting, credit risk analysis, or fraud analyst duties in the financial services/lending industry.
- Candidate possesses Intermediate level of skill with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for preparation of reports and presentation materials.
- Familiarity with BI tools (Tableau or PowerBI).
- Proficiency in analyzing large datasets using a database query language (e.g., SQL), R, Python, or other similar programming language.
