Aptive is seeking a Web Developer with a strong background in both designing and developing accessible websites. The Web Developer will work closely with project teams and client stakeholders within the U.S. Department and Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Transportation to help accomplish their strategic goals. This role involves a balanced focus on front-end development, web design, and consulting to ensure websites and features are functional, meet requirements, and provide good user experience.

 

This is a full-time, remote position (with the option to work from Aptive’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with designers, researchers, project team members, and stakeholders to implement and maintain high-quality websites.
  • Develop and maintain robust front-end code using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Design websites and website features using best practices and insights from user research.
  • Create and edit website content in WYSIWYG editors in TeamSite, WordPress, and Drupal.
  • Ensure all delivered products comply with section 508 and WCAG 2.1 A and AA for accessibility.
  • Employing data-driven approaches to decision-making.
  • Optimize website performance for maximum speed, scalability, and usability.
  • Conduct code reviews, testing, and debugging to ensure robustness and reliability.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 4+ years of web development experience building websites, preferably in the public sector.
  • Expert-demonstrated knowledge and experience writing HTML and CSS.
  • Proficiency in writing JavaScript and using JavaScript libraries.
  • Strong applicable knowledge of web accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG).
  • Knowledge of current web design best practices.
  • Experience using CMSs like WordPress, Drupal, and TeamSite to build websites.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to connect and align small details with an overarching vision.
  • Experience, comfort, and confidence in pitching new ideas to clients.
  • Active Public Trust security clearance preferred; ability to obtain one required.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting large federal agencies.
  • Experience using GA4 (Google Analytics) to track and analyze user behavior, optimize website performance, and generate reports.
  • Experience with implementing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies.
  • Experience using design tools like Figma.
  • Experience with user-centered design.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Knowledge, usage, and maintenance of design systems, preferably the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS).
  • Experience building HTML email templates.
  • Experience with SharePoint administration or development.
