MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
To ensure that all chemicals falling within their scope of work, which is used at the various points of application, is being changed out, decanted, pumped, filled or made down in time to prevent any stock outs on the machine. This includes the operation of the starch cooker, and the receiving of deliveries. These activities are to be done in a safe manner as prescribed by the works instructions & MSDS information and the various training received in the handling of chemicals and use of PPE. All equipment used in executing these activities are to be checked and ensured that it is safe for use before it is being used by making use of the various checklists available. All activities are to be communicated and noted properly to ensure continuation of the various tasks performed. Daily PM2 samples and labwork to be conducted reported to Solenis representative.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
• Ensure you arrive on time to take over your shift and that you understand what is expected of you and where attention is required and tasks to be performed.
– No shift will be taken without the visual and verbal contact of the person you are to relieve.
• Ensure work environment is safe before any activity is executed in which ever form it may be by making use of checklists, 3 minute risk assessments and other visual inspections.
– Look after the health and safety of yourself and those around you.
• Ensure all PPE supplied is in safe, clean and effective condition before using it for whatever task is being performed.
– Ensure that the correct PPE is used for the task at hand as per the chemical risk assessment, works instructions and SDS information available.
• Ensure that the areas of responsibility are kept in a clean and safe condition as far as it is possible.
– Bunded areas, floors, tables, cupboards and offloading points are kept clean
– All obstacles in whatever form they might be that presents a safety hazard is correctly stacked, removed, rolled up, marked or highlighted so as to prevent any potential incident or accident from occurring
• Collect and analyze PM2 samples
– Collecting various pulp and water samples daily in the paper machine process
– Complete labwork and report to manager
• Ensure all communication is noted, understood, signed and executed where applicable in order to remain up to speed with regard to your working environment and conditions.
– Adhere to and follow instructions, corrections and guidelines provided.
• Receive all chemicals via offloading of tankers directly in to the plant or via offloading of IBC flowbins or bags into the chemical stores.
– Ensure the necessary documentation is signed and copies kept for the stock controller.
– Ensure that the correct stacking procedures are followed when receiving IBC bins and especially bags to prevent loss or spillage
• Supply chemicals to the point of application in time to ensure that there will be no stock outs at any given time. This includes the cooking of starch, to be done as per SWI for the operation of the cooker as required.
• Remove and correctly place all empty IBC bins, drums or bags in the various areas stipulated and in the correct manner stipulated.
• Ensure that your tasks are performed as per the works instructions provided.
– – Wherever a works instruction might not cover a specific task or might contain insufficient information for the task at hand, follow the correct and safe execution of the task by doing the necessary 3 minute risk assessment and visual inspection of the task to be performed.
– Bring the ineffective works instruction under the attention of the accounts manager and stock controller in order to correct.
• Take care of and respect those things that belong to either the customer or to Solenis.
– This would include movable and fixed property in whatever form it might be, i.e. forklifts, bunding, structures, PPE, pumps, pipes and so forth.
AUTHORITY/RESPONSIBILITY
• You are responsible for your safe working of a shift and those affected by your activities whilst on shift. This includes all housekeeping and execution of tasks.
• You are responsible for receiving, offloading, decanting, pumping, loading and storing of all chemicals that fall within your scope of work and the necessary documentation that this entails.
• You are not responsible for those chemicals outside your scope of work, i.e. those belonging to another supplier, or even the customer without the consent of your stock controller or accounts manager and only if this is agreed upon by those involved.
• You are responsible for communicating and correcting, where applicable and possible and within your scope of work, any non conformance, whether it be spillages, stock out, equipment failures or anything else that might prevent you from continuing your duties as indicated above or might pose a problem to customer output quality or a threat to someone’s health and safety or to the environment.
• You have no authority to perform any other duty that falls outside your scope of work irrespective of who gave you instructions to perform such duties if you have not received the proper training and given the correct understanding of that duty to be performed.
– This would be especially true for those activities that would be on the customer’s process that does not constitute part of your routine activities as an additive plant operator.
