About the role:
The Corporate Counsel, Sustainability is responsible to provide general legal advice and counseling relating to Alcoa’s business, with a dedicated focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives and sustainability activities. This position will be part of the Legal group and will be the primary support to the Sustainability team in implementing ESG strategy and standards at Alcoa. This position will report to the SVP, Chief Governance Counsel and Secretary.

  • Provide legal advice on general corporate matters
  • Serve as a thought leader and monitor and advise on all aspects of ESG disclosure, governance, and best practices, including legal, regulatory, market developments and trends, and risk mitigation initiatives.
  • Provide strategic, practical legal advice on ESG issues and reporting strategy under existing and emerging requirements and regulations
  • Review and advise on public disclosures, including ESG disclosure framework
  • Legal advisor to internal stakeholders, including Sustainability, External Affairs, Commercial, Controllership, and Investor Relations groups on ESG matters
  • Analyze potential impacts to the business and recommend risk mitigation activities
  • Undertake and advise on adjacent legal matters and to provide support to other Legal projects as needed

What you can bring to this role:

  • Law degree from an accredited college or university and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (or ability to promptly qualify).
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience, including with litigation, environmental, and/or compliance matters.
  • Law firm and/or in-house experience working for a global public company, preferably from mining, manufacturing, or capital intensive industries.
  • Experience with U.S. public company disclosure frameworks.
  • Comprehensive understanding of global regulatory and other reporting frameworks relating to sustainability such as:
    • SEC climate disclosure requirements (US)
    • CSRD, CSDDD (Europe)
    • ISSB (global)
    • Other global legal/regulatory developments (Australia, Brazil, Canada)
  • Knowledge of sustainability, corporate responsibility, or ESG best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance legal and business risks.
  • Client focus and ability to collaborate with internal stakeholders across functions while providing exceptional and comprehensive legal services.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
