Library Media Specialist

Required Certificates and Licenses: Must have a North Carolina Teaching Certification. Must have Educational Media Specialist PK-12 Certification.

Residency Requirements: Must reside in North Carolina

The Library Media Specialist is a state certified professional for ensuring the school library media/technology program of the school is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of both the school and district.  Plans, promotes, executes and evaluates the library media/technology program and services to ensure its quality by effectively managing school reading catalogs while also ensuring that the school is in compliance with all North Carolina Department of Education standards and mandates. This is a full-time position. Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week is required. Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 9-5 (or 8-4) or as defined by the school.

• Reviews and approves literature for the school that is in compliance with Department of Education Standards
• Maintains certification and current knowledge of expectations of the North Carolina Department of Education
• Leads committee and reviews of challenged materials
• Supports and encourages schoolwide literacy initiatives to develop lifelong readers and learners.
• Supports the opportunity for all stakeholders to experience value of reading for pleasure.
• Instructs students and staff in the effective and ethical use of information technology both in and out of the classroom, including digital, visual, textual and technological literacy.
• Enhances student achievement through a systemically and collaboratively planned instructional program by supporting all facets of the curriculum.
• Demonstrates technology as a tool to research, access, organize, evaluate and communicate information.
• Maintains a Collection Development plan that guides curation, weeding, inventory and how the collection is organized.
• Collaborates to provide professional development for school staff on integrating digital learning and media resources into instruction.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Required Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree
• Active North Carolina Educational Media Specialist PK-12 Certification
• Ability to clear required background check

OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers to interpret and produce numeric, tabular, and
graphic representations of student data, and use it to drive instructional decisions
Receptive to receiving coaching on a regular basis with administrators
Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word; PowerPoint
Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms
Strong written/verbal communication skills
Desired Qualifications:
Experience working with gifted and talented students
Experience working with the proposed age group
Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology
Experience teaching online (virtual) and/or in a brick-and-mortar environment
Experience with online learning platform

This is a home-based position, with up to 25% travel included throughout the state of North Carolina for state testing, professional development, etc., as required by the school.
